The Parkway Trust and Fresno Audubon Society have joined forces to offer a birding class that combines instruction, exploration, and fun! Beginning birders will see and learn about local and migratory birds that might be visiting the River Center. New birders will discover easy ways to identify migrating and year-round, local birds. The class will include a walk looking for birds in the various habitats found at the River Center. We will meet at the new picnic shelter on the north side of the center. After learning about using binoculars and various aids in bird identification like guide books and phone apps, we will bird around the property. Bring binoculars, lunch, water and sun protection.  Fresno Audubon will have binoculars to loan if you do not have your own. Children are welcome!

Join Fresno Audubon on Saturday, May 11 as we explore China Creek Park and Avocado Lake Park. We will meet at 6:45 in the Wal-Mart parking lot at Blackstone and Ashlan (36.793565, -119.789792, near El Pollo Loco), where we will arrange carpooling.

 

From there, we will make the approximately 30 minute drive to China Creek Park in Centerville (36.722578, -119.502003). Entry is free at China Creek Park, but parking is a little limited near the entrance. We will hike around China Creek for about 3 to 4 hours. At this location, our target species will be Black-headed Grosbeak, Bullock’s Oriole, Western Tanager, Yellow Warbler, Wilson’s Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, and many more!

 

After birding at China Creek, we will head to Avocado Lake (36.782435, -119.407550), where we will have a picnic lunch before birding. Be advised that there is a $5 fee per vehicle to enter Avocado Lake Park. Our target species at Avocado Lake will be Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Violet-green Swallow, Oak Titmouse, Phainopepla, Lesser Goldfinch, Ash-throated Flycatcher, and several others! We will plan to wrap up around 2:00 or 3:00 PM.

 

Participants should bring snacks, lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, and binoculars, and should dress in layers. Registration is required for all participants.

Description
The Sierra Foothill Conservancy in conjunction with Audubon California will be hosting “Birds & Biodiversity: Ranch to Ranges Bioblitz” at the Conservancy’s McKenzie Preserve on Sunday September 8, 2024.

This program is part of the California Biodiversity Week observation. The program will explore the relationship between rangeland management practices and biodiversity and will include botanical and birding tours of the Conservancy’s McKenzie Preserve, as well as presentations by representatives of California Audubon, Sierra Foothill Conservancy, and Point Blue Conservation Science. It is open to the public at no cost, although pre-registration through SFC is required.

Bio:

Birding Northern California for 57 years, Rich has been leading field trips for 24 years.
He is the field guide for Yellowbilled Tours, which offers annual birding tours to Nome
Alaska, as well as Arizona, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Belize, Colombia, Guatemala,
Panama and France.

 

Rich lives in Marin County, an active member of the Marin Audubon Society and served
for eight years as the conservation chair for the Alameda County Ohlone Audubon Society.
He participated in the Eastern Alameda Breeding Bird Atlas, The Altamont Pass Wind
Turbine Area Golden Eagle & Raptor stakeholder group and avian surveys. Rich is the
co-compiler of the Eastern Alameda County Christmas Bird Count now in its tenth year,
and a participant in four Marin CBC’s and the 2021 Marin County Breeding Bird Atlas.

 

He is the field guide for Yellowbilled Tours (www.yellowbilledtours.com), which offers annual birding tours to Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Belize, Guatemala, Panama, and France.
