The following
programs are scheduled for 2008-2009. More details about speakers and topics
will be added as they become available.
September 9, 2008: Jeff Davis. "Birds and the Law."
"Cliff Swallow nests at my apartment complex were removed at the request of the apartment manager. Is this legal?"
"I keep a small collection of feathers I find during my travels. Someone told me its against the law to possess these without a permit. Is that correct?"
"I read that a wheat field containing thousands of Tricolored Blackbird nests was harvested during the nestling period but that killing these birds was legal because farmers are exempt from laws that otherwise protect such birds. Is that true?"
"A large housing development is proposed for construction in a grassland area where I regularly see Swainsons Hawks. Because this hawk is listed under the California Endangered Species Act, will its presence on the site stop the proposed development project?"
Jeff Davis, an ecologist with H. T. Harvey & Associates, will answer these questions and others as he reviews the laws and regulations that concern wild birds in California.
November 18, 2008 (THIRD Tuesday of the month): Lynn Hemink. "A Trip to Antarctica."
In February 2008 Fresno Audubon member Lynn Hemink participated in a nature tour to Antarctica. His illustrated presentation will feature birds, mammals, and lots of icebergs.
January 13, 2009: Chris Acree. "Reviving the San Joaquin."
Chris Acree, Executive Director of Revive the San Joaquin, will report on that organization's work to sustain the economic, environmental, and recreational benefits of a healthy San Joaquin River.
March 10, 2009: Madhusudan Katti. "The Fresno Bird Count."
